A Three-Fold Cord

Hebrews 10:25  “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

We’ve looked at the importance of Bible reading and prayer in our daily walk. But when we’re talking about “finishing strong,” we need one more thing: corporate worship. I can already hear people saying things like, “I don’t need to go to church to be a Christian.” And they’re right. Becoming a Christian is one-time choice to repent and receive Christ as your Savior.

But I’m talking about “finishing strong.” And for that, you and I need fellowship with other Christians. There’s something powerful about singing together, listening to the message together, bowing our heads together at the end of the service. There’s also something powerful about being in a small group (Sunday School class) with people who love the Lord.

We also fellowship with our church family in smaller groups outside church. Sometimes we go out to eat with “church” friends after the Sunday service or we get together during the week. We also visit in one another’s homes. A simple meal, cake and coffee…but more to the point, fellowship.

What does all that do? Well, it first makes us see we are part of something. Secondly, it offers some accountability. If we miss church one Sunday, people are going to call or message to check on us and let us know we were missed.

“But I was hurt by a church,” “the people aren’t friendly,” or “I don’t have time for that.” To the first two, I say, “So what?” If we’re really wanting Christian fellowship, we can find a way. We might need to get off Facebook, forget dusting our baseboards and invite someone to lunch or supper. If they can’t or don’t want to come, invite someone else. As for not having time? We make time for things that are important to us.

Do you want to finish strong? I know I do. And it won’t happen without all three of those things. Ecclesiastes 4:12 says “a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
