What is really “The Forgotten Generation?”

Isaiah 46:4 “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”

According to generational studies, Generation X (born between 1965-1980) is the “Forgotten Generation.” I can see how they might feel “forgotten” between the Boomers and the Millenials. But when it comes to Christians and today’s churches, I have to disagree.

Our most “forgotten” group in today’s churches is the seniors. According to “Religion Unplugged,” 60% of Americans over the age of 65 attended church. By 2020, that percentage had dropped to 45%. Part, or rather most of the reasons are because churches are focused on younger families, the music and even ministry have changed, and seniors are feeling left out and/or ignored.

But our churches aren’t the only place seniors are feeling “forgotten.” In years past, their homes were usually the hub of family activities. The kids and grandkids came, Grandma cooked, everyone brought something, and there was joy in the chaos. But things change, don’t they? And we can’t do what we used to, can’t always keep up with their energy and our homes become sadly quiet during the holidays. We can find ourselves feeling left out, sidelined and, yes, “forgotten.”

Let me remind you there is Someone who will never forget or “sideline” you or me. He is the One who is closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). Just as our God formed us in the womb and had a plan for our lives, He is forever faithful in every generation. He will sustain us physically and mentally. He’s the faithful, “show-up” God. According to Isaiah 46:4, reminds us He has made us, and He promises to sustain us, to carry us, to rescue us.

Take a deep breath and, with that breath, remind yourself your life still has purpose. The God who cannot lie will work out that purpose in your life. And you will never be forgotten by Him.
